History of the Chinese Gender Calendar
There are several stories about the origins of the Chinese Gender Calendar Chart, but none can be verified as fact. One legend says the chart is over 700 years old and was discovered in an ancient royal tomb. Another version claims it was hidden in an underground chamber of the Forbidden City during the Qing Dynasty.
The most widely told tale credits the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911 A.D.), where the chart was supposedly created based on the I Ching (“Book of Changes”). It incorporates traditional Chinese elements, including the Five Elements (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, Earth), Yin and Yang, and the Pa Kua (Eight Trigrams). Some say the imperial family used it to select sons, and that it remained secret within the palace walls.
At the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the story goes that the chart was seized during the Boxer Rebellion and brought to England, where it was translated into English. It later surfaced in Austria and was eventually published in a Taiwanese newspaper in 1972 by a Chinese scholar who had copied its contents.1
Despite these tales, there is no historical evidence confirming the chart’s authenticity. Today, the Chinese Gender Calendar is best viewed as a fun and lighthearted way to guess your baby’s gender — not a scientifically proven method.
